Do Solar Panels Need Direct Sunlight to Work?

by luxury-best

Are solar panels required to be exposed to direct sunlight? Solar panels can still produce energy in shaded locations, even though direct sunlight is best for maximum production. Solar panels can still generate power, regardless of whether there is a tall structure or a winter storm.

How Do Solar Panels Work?

Solar panels basically harness sunlight and convert it into energy. The sun’s photons are absorbed by solar cells when it shines in their direction. The electrons are found inside solar cells. An electrical current is created when photons and electrons come into contact. All that movement creates clean, abundant electricity for your house.

Do Solar Panels Require Direct Sunlight?

While direct sunlight is great for solar panels to capture the most beneficial stuff, they don’t necessarily require it. Shade could actually be an issue. Tall buildings, tall trees, and inclement weather can all block the sun’s path.

Solar panels capture sunlight in the same way as solar cells. However, this can be done both directly and indirectly. Photons from indirect sunlight, scattered sunlight, and direct sunlight can still be absorbed by solar panels. Indirect sunlight can be used to produce electricity when direct sunlight is not available. This could raise questions about efficiency.

Does Shade Affect Solar Panel Efficiency?

Shades can block sunlight from reaching solar panels, which could lead to a decrease in efficiency. Solar panels can absorb at most 1 kW of sunlight per square meter. This is in ideal conditions. Solar panels need to have at least four hours of peak sunlight in order to work well.

Shades can block solar cells from producing at their full potential. This is the problem with shade. Rooftop solar panels are great because even if some of the solar cells are covered, the remaining solar panels will still function.

Contact ESD Solar for a simplified explanation of the process. We will determine how much shade your roof gets and whether your roof is eligible for solar energy.
