Making Your Summer To-Do List: Doors, Windows and Insulation

3 min read

Most people spend a lot of time thinking about the inside of their home – the décor, the furniture, the bedding and the drapes, for example. However, there are many other elements of a home that deserve your consideration from time to time. Things like windows, doors, insulation and the roof are often left without thought until the time when you realize that something needs replaced or updated.

By staying on top of the repairs that are necessary within the structure of your home, you will experience less stress and a more comfortable environment in which to live. For example, most people don’t think a lot about how energy efficient their home is until winter rolls around and those hefty utility bills start coming in the mail every month. This is unfortunate, since you likely don’t have any desire to be installing insulation or repairing windows in the dead of winter.

Instead of waiting until the last minute, be sure to put these tasks on your to-do list in the summer. Summer is a great time to update your home. The days are longer and it’s easier to move about outside because the weather is fair. Before you begin working, make your to-do list. You may choose to organize it by putting the things that are priorities on the top. Another option is to do the cheaper tasks first. Finally, you could put the tasks that require the least amount of time on the top of your list. The key to getting things done is to organize your list in a way that makes sense to you.

If your goal is making your home more energy efficient, start by taking a good, hard look at all of the ways in your home that heated air can escape. This typically includes the doors and windows, but taking a look in your attic can also help you pinpoint some places where your hard-earned dollars may be escaping. As a final consideration, look to your home’s insulation and decide how you might go about adding more in an effort to help save money.
